A Generalised Concept of Dominance in Linear Programming Models AgEcon
Drynan, Ross G..
The notion of dominance most familiar to agricultural economists is perhaps the decision theoretic concept entailed in comparing one risky prospect to others. But dominance concepts are also relevant in the linear programming context, for example in identifying redundant constraints. In this note, the standard concept of dominance in linear programming is generalized by defining dominance with respect to differing levels of information about the programming problem.

A Note Comparing Single-Index Models and Quadratic Programming Models for Farm Planning Under Risk AgEcon
Batterham, Robert L.; Drynan, Ross G.; Oarke, D.K.; Carter, P.H..
Single-index models from portfolio theory have previously been adapted for risk efficient farm planning in North America. The potential for using single-index models in farm planning is considered in this paper both theoretically and in the light of two illustrative Australian case studies. It is concluded that single-index models have no significant computational or other advantages over full quadratic programming portfolio selection models for farm planning and may produce relatively poor plans and poor assessments of the risks associated with those plans.

Allocative vs. Technical Efficiency, and Related Matters in Linear Programming AgEcon
Drynan, Ross G..
The relationship between technical and allocative efficiency is examined by drawing on concepts of activity dominance in linear programming. The conclusion is reached that there is no fundamental distinction between technical and allocative efficiency. Other topics addressed in the paper, all connected by the common thread of activity dominance, include activity specification and the nature of returns to scale.

Management of Water Reservoirs (Embungs) in West Timor, Indonesia AgEcon
Pradhan, Deepa; Ancev, Tihomir; Drynan, Ross G.; Harris, Michael.
Communal water storage reservoirs (embungs) that serve many villages in West Timor, Indonesia, by providing water during the prolonged annual dry season are experiencing severe sedimentation problems. Sedimentation of reservoirs progressively reduces their water storage capacity and the benefits to community. This paper investigates four alternative strategies for managing the sedimentation of a typical village embung: (1) current management (a “no management” situation), (2) soil conservation in the embung catchment, (3) periodic sediment removal and (4) both soil conservation and sediment removal. Without periodic sediment removal, an embung has a finite life dependent on the rate of sedimentation. The results indicate that periodic cleaning is clearly...

On Resolving Multiple Optima in Linear Programming AgEcon
Drynan, Ross G..
Although the solution to a linear programming problem is not necessarily unique, the theoretical and practical implications of multiple optima have not been thoroughly discussed by agricultural economists. Recently there have been calls for greater recognition, resolution and exploitation of multiplicity. In this note, it is argued that previous recommendations for resolving multiplicity are restrictive both procedurally and conceptually. An alternative and more general approach is outlined.

On Some Aspects of Organizational Efficiency in the Queensland Cattle Slaughtering Industry AgEcon
Brown, Colin G.; Drynan, Ross G..
An examination based on stochastic plant location analysis was made of organizational efficiency in the Queensland cattle slaughtering industry. Short-run models were used to highlight forces influencing commodity flows and plant utilization levels in the industry. These models were also used to explore effects of freight equalization arrangements. Freight equalization was found to involve annual costs of resource misallocation of the order of $1 million. Potential efficiency gains through improved plant locations and sizes were also estimated and found to be at least $4.4 million.

PLANT LOCATION ANALYSIS USING DISCRETE STOCHASTIC PROGRAMMING AgEcon
Brown, Colin G.; Drynan, Ross G..
A plant location model with two major aspects is outlined. First, discrete stochastic programming is used to handle variability in supplies and demands. Second, the cost structure of plants is modelled in more detail and with more realism than is usual. Results from applying the model to the Queensland cattle slaughtering industry demonstrate the inappropriateness of using traditional deterministic plant location models to analyse problems with major stochastic elements. Deterministic models yield plant locations, sizes, throughputs, commodity flows and implications which differ markedly from those generated by stochastic models in which plant sizes and locations are optimally matched to variable fat cattle supplies. In addition, the traditional...

Sufficient Conditions for Dominance of Simply Related Prospects AgEcon
Drynan, Ross G..
Sufficient conditions for dominance of simply related prospects are developed for newly defined classes of limited-variation-in-risk-parameter utility functions. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for classes of contant-risk-parameter utility functions. The latter include classes of quadratic, power and exponential utility functions. The conditions can be incorporated into easily implemented procedures for locating efficient prospects.

The Effects of Policy Changes on the Production and Sales of Milk in New South Wales AgEcon
Drynan, Ross G.; Perich, M.; Batterham, Robert L.; Whelan, S.P..
Regulation of the New South Wales dairy industry creates inefficiencies and raises the cost of production. In this study, the industry is modelled by adapting an ABARE subregional programming model, and using spatial equilibrium linear activity analysis to examine the effects on the production of market and manufacturing milk within different regions of New South Wales of alternative policies. The output generated by the model includes regional market and manufacturing milk production levels, prices and quantities of market milk sold in each period and region, and market and manufacturing milk transfers between regions. The model also generates details of farm-level activities for each of the representative farms used in the construction of the model....
